MBT-A/CD Training

A four-day training for clinicians who want to work in a more advanced way with mentalization-based treatment for young people. For many participants it marks a shift from general clinical competence to a more specialised, relational way of working with adolescents and complex presentations.

Is this for you?

A training for those who meet young people in difficult moments.

For everyone working with — or training to work with — young people aged 10 to 25. The method is designed to function across professions: psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses, physicians, teachers, police officers, social workers, and students on related programmes are all welcome.

Curriculum

Four days, step by step.

Theory, clinical examples and practical exercises woven together across four days in Karlstad.

  1. Before the course

    Pre-course preparation

One month before we begin you receive access to recorded lectures on mentalization theory together with short quizzes — a practical head start before the in-person days.

  2. Day 1

Adolescent development and the mentalizing stance

An introduction to adolescent development and to the concepts of mentalization and epistemic trust. Theory is interleaved with role-play. The day closes with a short assignment for day two.

  3. Day 2

    Interventions in difficult situations

Practising mentalization-based interventions in challenging situations such as self-harm, aggression, dissociation and suicidal ideation. Tools for psychoeducation with young people and parents, and work with the mentalizing profile, formulation and risk plan.

  4. Day 3

Structure of MBT and peer supervision

How to begin, conduct and end MBT. We also cover mentalization-based supervision and practise how colleagues can help one another stay in a mentalizing stance in everyday clinical work.

  5. Day 4

    MBT-CD and the relational focus

A deepening into MBT-CD and its relational focus. We explore how epistemic mistrust shapes work with complex presentations, particularly when the young person has not chosen to begin treatment. Theory is combined with exercises and case material.

  6. Next steps

    After the course

On completion you have a stable foundation in mentalization theory and practical skills. Accreditation as a practitioner requires ongoing supervision, which the faculty is happy to guide you toward.
